What are these trees with Purple Flowers That Invade Lisbon in Spring?

If you’ve visited Lisbon in late spring, you’ve probably stopped mid-walk, looked up, and asked yourself: “What are these trees with purple flowers?” Well, my friend — meet the Jacarandás.

These stunning trees sprinkle the city with a magical violet hue from late May to mid-June, making Lisbon look like something out of a romantic dream (or a very well-filtered Instagram post, let’s be honest). But it’s not just the color that captivates — it’s the way the blossoms fall gently onto the calçada portuguesa, carpeting the sidewalks like confetti from nature.

Where Did Jacarandás Come From?

Jacarandás aren’t originally Portuguese — they actually come from South America, mainly Brazil and Argentina. They were brought to Lisbon in the early 19th century, during the Age of Discoveries and Portugal’s colonial connections.

Someone had the brilliant idea to plant them across the city, and we’ve been grateful ever since.

Where to See Jacarandás in Lisbon?

These purple beauties love the sun, so they’re all over town. Some of the best spots include:

  • Avenida da Liberdade – Elegant street, luxury shops, and now: purple trees.

  • Príncipe Real – Perfect for a coffee under the blooms.

  • Campo Grande – A more local vibe and a true jacarandá forest in bloom.

  • Gulbenkian Gardens – Beautiful year-round, but in jacarandá season? A showstopper.

Oh, and don’t forget your camera — or just let me snap the perfect picture for you on one of my private tours. I know the best angles!

Why Do They Matter?

Besides being stunning, jacarandás are a symbol of Lisbon’s spring awakening. The city shakes off the winter grey and explodes in color, energy, and joy. They mark the beginning of longer days, street festivals, outdoor lunches, and sunset views that stay with you long after you’ve flown home.

Peppe’s Tip?

If you’re in Lisbon between late May and mid-June — you’re in luck. It’s the jacarandá season, Santos Populares is in full swing, the weather is perfect, and everything just feels… alive.

And if you want to see the best jacarandá spots, plus hidden gems, stunning views, and unforgettable stories — you know who to call. I’d love to show you around and share this magic up close.
